Why You Should Know Your Eye Shape & Not Make These Mistake

Every eye is beautiful. There is no one size fits all when it comes to eye shapes. But I’m sure every one of us would like to enhance our beauty and look better in general and what better way to enhance your beauty than to improve the way our eyeshadow and eye makeup looks on our eyes.

At the end of the day, the function of our eyes is the ability to see and that’s more than enough. But there is no harm in beautifying them as well. I’m sure there are millions of eye shapes but for the sake of this article I’m going to take the example of the most common eye shapes and hopefully you identify with one of them.

1.Round- Round eyes are one of the most common eye shapes you can find especially here in India. If you want to know if you have round eyes or not, you can determine it using a ruler.

Place the ruler on the inner corner of one of your eyes and run it across your eye. If the ruler runs straight across your iris and to the outer corner of your eyes then you might have round eyes. Then look at your iris, if your eyelids don’t fully cover your iris and you can still see the whites of your eyes below the iris then you have round eyes.

To enhance round eyes, extend your eyeliner to the outer corners of your eyes to elongate them. As for eyeshadow, extend your eye shadow to the outer corners in a winged like shape and avoid glittery shadow on the center of the lids.

One advantage that I love about this eye shape is that they give an illusion of a doll-like face which is always so pretty. This eye shape also shows off the beautiful eye color.

To complement these eyes, you can also emphasize on the lashes for a doll-like gaze. Celebrities with round eyes include- Ashley Olsen, Zooey Deschanel, and Katy Perry.

2.Almond- This is the most versatile eye shape and suits any makeup look. To know if you have almond eyes or not, keep a ruler in front of one of your eyes. If your inner corner, iris, and outer corner all fall on a straight line then you might have almond eyes.

One more way to check is to see if the whites of your eyes are still visible under your iris or not. If not, then you have almond eyes.

For this one you can use any makeup techniques. You can play with different intensities of eyeshadows. Smokey eyes look exotic with this eye shape as you can blend them in any way that you like.

Sometimes almond eyes are also lifted on the outer corners so you can also play with eyeshadows and emphasize the brow bone. Put some light-colored shimmery eyeshadow or highlighter on the inner corner for a more awake look. Celebrities with almond-shaped eyes include- Mila Kunis, Aishwarya Rai, Rihanna.

3.Monolid- This is a very common eyelid shape in Asia. To know whether you have a Monolid or not all you have to do it see whether you have a crease in your eyelid or not.

If you have no crease and you have just one full eyelid then you have a Monolid. This is a good way to play around with different eye shadow looks as there is an undivided space.

You can create dimension and definition using different eyeshadows. You can also create a fake crease if you want although it is completely unnecessary.

To do this, you can put a dark and sharp streak of eyeshadow right across the eyelid for an illusion of a crease. You can also use eyelid tape if you want.

Wearing a thick eyeliner and mascara is also a good way to create the illusion of wider eyes and add dimension to them.

An orange or bronze eyeshadow blended around the top and bottom of the eyes followed by a winged line and a good mascara look gorgeous on this eye shape.

I love this eye shape; there’s so much you can do with them. Celebrities with monolid eyes include- Red Velvet’s Seulgi, TWICE’s Dahyun, and Ahn Sohee.

4.Hooded- This is one of the most common eye shapes here where I live; Shillong.

To know if you have hooded eyes or not, look closely at your eyelid. If your upper crease covers the outer corners of your eyes then you have hooded eyes.

Sometimes the eyeshadow you put on doesn’t seem visible because the upper crease covers it especially if on the outer corner.

To fix this, apply your eyeshadow above your natural crease as well. Extend your eyeshadow way over the crease. For eyeliner, don’t follow the natural lash line but extend it upwards from the center of the lid and upwards and outwards.

Celebrities with hooded eyes include- Jennifer Lawrence, Blake Lively, and Emma Stone.

5. Up-turned- If you want to know if your eyes are upturned or not, put a ruler right across your iris, if your inner corner falls below the line and your outer corner falls above the line, then you have upturned eyes.

Your eyes seem to outwards and upwards. This type of eye shape has been highly favored in the fashion and makeup industry lately. Some models even surgically enhance their eyes to have this shape.

A common makeup trend that includes making your eyes look upturned is called the fox makeup look and is very common nowadays.

To enhance your eye shape, do not over accentuate your winged eyeliner. Make sure your wing is rather straightforward and not too lifted, as your eyes are already naturally lifted.

Use a darker shade of eye shadow on the outer corners. Focus your mascara all around the eyes evenly on both the upper and lower lash line. Celebrities with upturned eyes include Sophia Loren and Kendal Jenner.

6.Downturned- The downturned eye shape is the exact opposite of the upturned eye shape.

Here the inner corners are raised as compared to outer corners. This has been one favored eye shape in South Korea and Japan for years.

This eye shape corresponds with the “Kawaii” or “Ulzzang” look.

When these eyes are enhanced with false eyelashes and a good mascara, they give off a very cute dolly look.

Focus your mascara on your outer corners and even try out the fox eye or the cat-eye look.

When drawing your eyeliner, don’t follow your natural eye line but lift the eyeliner from the center onwards.

Don’t let your eyeshadow drop lower than your outer corners, instead lift your eyeshadow base higher. Celebrities with downturned eyes include Chloe Moretz and Merilyn Monroe.

7.Protruding- If your eyeballs are set forward on your eye socket then you might have protruding eyes.

This eye shape is prominent and is usually the first thing people notice about you if you have these eyes.

These eyes are beautiful and there are a lot of things you can do with these eyes. It’s the type of eye shape that will show off your beautiful eye shadow.

For your eye shape, a smokey eye look will suit you better than a cut crease. Don’t go for overly fluffy and large false eyelashes. Celebrities with protruding eyes include Amanda Seyfried and Nicole Richie.

8.Deep-set- If your eyeballs are set deeper on your eye socket then you might have deep-set eyes. This type of eye shape is very flattering and mysterious.

To enhance this eye shape, put a lighter eyeshadow on the lower part of your crease and a darker eye shadow on the upper part.

A cut crease will look marvelous on you and a smokey eye will make your eyes look deeper than they already are. Long lashes will look good on you. Celebrities with deep-set eyes include Heidi Klum and Keira Knightley.

9.Wide-set- Wide-set eyes, means that the eyes are far away from each other. When the space between your eyes is more than the size of your eyes, then you have wide-set eyes.

For your eye shape, you can bring your eye shadow closer to each other. Don’t extend your shadow or eyeliner too much to the sides.

When you wear a ponytail or a bun, don’t pull it too hard or your eyes will look wider than they already are. Celebrities with wide-set eyes include Kate Moss and Lily Cole.

10. Closed set- Closed set eyes means that your eyes are very close to each other.

If the space between your eyes is smaller than the size of your eyes, then you have closed set eyes.

For your eye shape, try and extend your eyeshadow and winged eyeliner outwards. Don’t accentuate your inner corners too much.

When you wear a ponytail or a bun, you can pull it tight to extend the sides of your eyes. But don’t pull it to the point where you start getting headaches. Celebrities with closed set eyes include Sarah Jessica Parker and Miley Cyrus.
